Brief History of the Department

The Department was established in 1995 as a degree awarding department in the Faculty of the Social Sciences. The first Head of Department was Dr. T. K. Aluko.

In 2000, the Faculty of Management Sciences was established as an independent Faculty. As a Department in the new Faculty, the Department has been administered by various individuals over the years. These include: Dr. T. K. O. Aluko, Dr. S. O. Ajayi, Prof. P. O. Oladele, Dr. A. A. Sulaiman, Dr. N. I. Akeke and Dr. K. K. Arogundade. The current Ag. Head of the Department is Dr. A. M. Awolaja.

The Department awards undergraduate programmes up to 2003; when it got approval in principle to commence postgraduate programmes. However, M.Sc, MBA, Ph.D programmes only fully commenced in 2010.

In 2016, the Department got approval for PGD programmes in Marketing, Management and Project Management as well as Master of Project Management as well as M.Phil/Ph.D. Also, in 2017, the Department got approval for two additional degree programmes namely: (i) B.Sc Marketing (ii) B.Sc Industrial Relations and Personnel Management (IRPM).

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT AND UNITS:

The department presently operates under three (3) main units namely:

  1. Business Administration
  2. Marketing
  3. Industrial Relations and Personnel Management

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Business Administration

The admission requirements for the B.Sc. Business Administration Degree shall be as follows:

  1. Candidates seeking admission to the four year Degree programme should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate of Education or their equivalents with at least five credit passes which must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics and pass at the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (UTME) with the cut-off points as may be determined by the Department and the University from time to time.
  2. For the three year Programme, a candidate is expected to meet the minimum entry requirements into the University as well as possess passes in Economics and Business Management at the Advanced Level or (a) Possession of a minimum of upper credit in Ordinary National Diploma in Business Studies.
    1. Marketing Programme

Four Years Programme (UTME)

Candidate must have obtained 5 credits in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two commercial subjects at WASC or GCE or National Examination Council (NECO) Ordinary level examinations. In addition to this, a good UTME score would be required of any prospective student under this mode of entry/study.

Three Years Programme (Direct Entry)

In addition to the requirements for a four programme as stated above, candidates must possess any of the following qualifications.

  • GCE Advanced level or HSC passes in Economics or Business Management and at least one other related subject; or
  • National Diploma (ND) in Marketing, Business Administration or Management Studies of approved Polytechnics or Colleges of Technology with a grade not lower than equivalent of Upper Credit; or
  • Diploma in Marketing of the Department of Business Administration of University of Ado Ekiti, with a grade not lower than equivalent of Upper Credit; or
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) in Marketing, Business Studies/Administration not lower than Lower Credit.

In all cases, the pre-requisite of possessing five Credits at WASC, GCE O’ Level and NECO in subjects, which shall include English Language, Mathematics, Economics must be satisfied.

Industrial Relations and Personnel Management Programme

Four Years Programme (UTME)

Candidate must have obtained 5 credits in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two commercial subjects at WASC or GCE or National Examination Council (NECO) Ordinary level examinations. In addition to this, a good UTME score would be required of any prospective student under this mode of entry/study.

In all cases, the pre-requisite of possessing five Credits at WASC, GCE O’ Level and NECO in subjects, which shall include English Language, Mathematics, Economics must be satisfied.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT

It is the mission of the department to provide quality education and professional training leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Business Administration, which may be awarded with honours or a Pass degree in the following areas of specialisation:

  1. B. Sc. Business Administration
  2. B. Sc. Marketing

iii.        B. Sc. Industrial Relations and Personnel Management

Towards this end, the curriculum is broadly interdisciplinary. First, the students are exposed to foundation courses in English, Economics, Mathematics, Computer and Philosophy/Logic as background for problem solving. Second, the Department offers compulsory core Courses in Business and Management, Accounting, Marketing, Finance, Production, Personnel and Human Resource Management, Quantitative Techniques, Small Business and Business Policy for career entry into Business Administration and Management positions in private and public business-industrial enterprises. Students are expected to select a set of elective courses with orientation and enrichment to their general education and business/management career objectives and biases. The capstone of the programme is the project work in which each student selects a business related problem for intensive study and applies his/her knowledge for its solutions under supervision of a member of academic staff in the Department.

The Postgraduate programme in the Department is to provide graduate education and training in Business Administration, which broadens the intellectual exposure of students in the discipline, develop their capacity to undertake rigorous and quality research in the core areas of the discipline which are as follows:

A.  Postgraduate Diploma Programmes:

  3. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Project Management
